Patio Door Window Treatments

!±8± Patio Door Window Treatments

Sliding glass patio doors are a wonderful idea, they create a sense of extra space by bringing your patio and backyard inside. Plus they can be a great source for sunlight. But you probably don't want your view open all the time, so window treatments are often needed for the times when you do need privacy, light control and even insulation.

Patio door window treatments can be a challenge, so here are a few expert suggestions. The traditional choice would be vertical blinds or curtains on a traverse rod, which emphasize the dramatic dimensions of your patio door while providing complete privacy and light control. Aluminum, vinyl or cloth vertical blinds come in any color-matching them to standard horizontal blinds on your other windows is a good idea-and can provide a chic, modern accent for any room. Vertical blinds also come in faux wood, which is a good match with wood or composite blinds. Another interesting option you might want to consider are ceiling mount verticals, which would eliminate a potentially annoying gap between the ceiling and the door frame.

There's also Levolor's exclusive BackStacker feature that keeps sometimes-unruly vertical vanes neatly and discretely stacked when open. Another consideration is insulation. Glass patio doors offer a lot of surface area for cold air to get in, and investing in either vertical cellular shades or heavy insulated curtains is an easy way to save on your heating bill.

But if you're in the market for patio door window treatments and vertical shades just aren't your thing, don't worry, you've still got options. Sliding panel track blinds are a novel offering now available in a wide range of materials from natural wovens to fabric to solar screens. As an aside, panel track blinds can also be used as a decorative room divider. You can also consider using multiple horizontal window blinds or shades to cover the area: splitting the shades per-pane (i.e. two if it's a full-glass sliding door) allows you to independently control your two shades. For example, the stationary shade can be lowered while the access shade is raised. In this situation, solar shades are an intriguing option, they'll screen out glare and UV rays while keeping your picture window view, and they're available in a wide range of patterns to compliment any interior environment.

If you are considering measuring and installing your vertical blinds or curtains, I would recommend utilizing the various "how to measure and install window blinds" videos available on websites like You Tube. The advantage of doing it yourself is predominantly cost savings. It easier than you might think.

Also, if you haven't checked out the various online retailers of window treatments, you may want to do some poking around on the internet. The major advantage of purchasing online is selection. Most of the top internet retailers offer the top brands, like Hunter Douglas, Levolor, Bali, Graber Comfortex and Kirsch, at discount prices. If you are like me and have trouble buying without seeing, you can go to a traditional brick and mortar store. You can purchase your window treatments there or take the information back to your online search armed with more specific information.

Save Energy and Money by Preparing Windows For Winter

!±8± Save Energy and Money by Preparing Windows For Winter

Now is not the time to be literally throwing money out the window. Combat the rising heating fuel prices this winter by preparing your home's windows.

Winterizing your home windows can save up to 10 percent on energy bills right away, according to the Department of Energy. Most heat escapes from a home through gaps around the windows, not through the glass itself. Failed caulk, gaps between the trim and the window, and bad window seals are the most likely culprits.

"To find out if your window seals have drafts, hold up a candle or incense stick near the window on a windy day," Ed Sieber of Glass Doctor of Charlotte, N.C., said. "You'll see the smoke move, and the more it moves the worse the draft. Don't just go by the temperature of the glass and whether or not there is condensation. Find where the draft is coming from."

Temporary window draft solutions are best for warmer, temperate climates that have occasional cold snaps, but they apply in colder climates as well. Start with these solutions if your wallet is light.

Replace light curtains with thicker curtains in the fall and winter months. Curtains restrict air movement, but they do not block it completely. Curtains can refresh the whole look of the room, though. Shutters or shades can change the look of a room as well, and they restrict the air flow better than curtains.

Most warm air escapes around window and door glass trim. Replace caulk annually and paint over it to complete the seal and protect the caulk. Rope caulk is easier to use than glazing caulk, and it can be easily removed and reused. Caulk does not completely seal the window, but it restricts more air flow.

Older windows that are not opened can be fitted with weather stripping to prevent leaks. To find out how much you need, measure the perimeter of the window and add at least 10% to account for overlap and waste.

Custom-built frame insert sheets of clear plastic can be attached to window trim with clips. They cover the entire window. Just make sure the window trim is caulked too.

"Permanent window draft solutions are best for homes that experience all four seasons like we have in Charlotte, and especially those homes in colder climates," Sieber said. "These solutions may set you back a few hundred or a few thousand dollars, depending on the size of your home and the number of windows."

Start by replacing cracked glass panes. Full-service glass shops such as Glass Doctor can replace a single pane without having the replace the entire window.

Foggy Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) have leaks, so they are not insulating like they should. There are many products that claim to remove moisture from IGUs, but the seal will never be the same. Full-service glass shops can repair or replace the IGUs so that your home has the original insulation factor. If your home does not have IGUs, in 2009 and 2010 there is a federal income tax credit of 30% of product cost up to ,500 for energy efficient replacement windows that can help you afford new windows.

If you cannot afford replacement windows even with the tax credit, storm windows may be a more viable option. They can be installed on the interior or exterior of the existing windows to provide additional layers of glass. Storm windows do not reduce energy loss like IGUs, but they can prevent drafts.

For more information about energy-efficient window options, go to the Energy Savers Web site by the U.S. Department of Energy.

retractable roof 2.avi

PORTABLE RETRACTABLE ROOF Great for the outdoors! But it can be used indoors in events and fairs. A portable retractable roof can replace the current canopies or tents that only address one portion of the shading from the top. This structure can protect the users from the excessive sunlight so as from the gusty winds that sometimes make less than enjoyable an outdoor event. This must be built of a light weight material with easy to snap tracks that will run the retractable roof. Manually or [ideally] mechanically. I am thinking on prebuilt panels of trusses that will easily slide on tracks of lightweight material which are easily snapped on. The track on the floor will hold the wall panels and the wall panels on top will have another track that will slide the roof up or down. The track on the floor can be of an inverted "T" shape for stability and hold down. The material of the panels can be of a fabric sheer porous material (so that the wind does not lift it up so as it would do to a parachute) and it can even have some variations of color or shades. For instance I would like two of the four triangles of each panel to be solid green and the other two of a sheer silk so that I get shade and sun. Portable would be a great use for people, but a fixed structure like this can be also attractive and functional. Many homes with pools might want to add a permanent version of a structure like this, except it might be built with acrylic glass on the panels, but still retractable ...

Roll Up-Down Protective Security Systems

!±8± Roll Up-Down Protective Security Systems

When you invest so much of your time, energy, finances and future in a business, you want to do everything you can to ensure that it is protected. You want to be able to sleep at night without worrying about someone stealing the things you have worked hard for. This kind of security and piece of mind it brings is worth every penny and it can be yours with the use of a roll up/down protective security system. This system can be designed to cover windows, storefronts, doors, garage bays, patios, storage rooms, and more, protecting them from theft and vandalism.

Rolling shutters are a cost effective way to protect the things in your business and the building itself. A brick thrown through a large plate glass window can cause a huge mess, to say nothing of the lost business while the clean-up and window replacement are being done. With a roll up/down protective security system you will never have to live through this hassle. A large system can roll down over the entire storefront offering the ultimate in security. This is a great option for industrial areas or other spots where there is little traffic at night. A secluded, unprotected target is the first choice of a professional burglar. Smaller doors can be used within a business to lock down confidential or hazardous materials. This makes sense in doctor's offices where medical records must be protected or in jewelry stores where large amounts of merchandise are kept in the back rooms. The secure area can be sealed off, allowing cleaning staff access to the rest of the area in off hours.

The shutters themselves are an impressive design. When not in use, they roll up into a small tube above the window or door. When lowered they slide down a set of heavy duty tracks. The shutters are made from a series of aluminum strips that can rotate like a set of venetian blinds. The shutters can be lowered with the slats left open. When open the shutters let in light and breeze, but provide shade for the business, lowering cooling costs. The shutters slats can be adjusted any amount from wide open to fully closed. When fully closed the slats lock together to create a virtually impenetrable security system for your business. The closed shutters also act to insulate the building, so they are saving you money even as they protect your investment. Many business insurance policies will offer discounts on coverage if you install a quality shutter system.

Thieves know how hard roll up/down security systems are to defeat, so usually they wont even try. It would be too much work and make too much noise to get through them to make it worthwhile, especially when there are easier targets down the street. So consider the advantages of installing the ultimate in security systems at your business and sleep well at night, secure in the knowledge that your business is not one of the "easy" targets.

The Freedom Fighters was still operational, just in case something bad happens. everyone was happy, well except one... Sally Acorn wanted more than anything was to have Mobian hero Sonic the Hedgehog as his girlfriend, but he was already the boyfriend to Amy Rose. She had to do everything to get him to dump her, and she thought of a way how... She had requested Tails and Rotor to invent a gum that can turn a victim into a blueberry. They asked how and she said just in case. A while later Rotor called out. "Sally, it's done!" She walked over into the lab and saw a piece of blue gum. "Is this it?" she asked, examining the gum. "Yep. A gum that will turn the chewer into a blueberry." Tails replied. "We've also designed it so that the juice could never come out, but makes the victim light weighted and bouncy so the victim could still move. We've also made sure that the victim wouldn't pop." Sally pulled out a devious smile. "So... who are you going to use it on?" Rotor asked. "Oh, this is just in case." Sally replied. She then left the lab with the gum. "Hey Tails, keep an eye on her." Rotor whispered. "Sure." Tails whispered back as he left the lab and followed Sally quietly. Chao Gardens Amy had moved into the chao gardens last week in the chao mansion. She heard a knock on the door. "Come in!" she called out. Sally opened the door and entered ...

Choosing the Correct Glass Lamp Shade

!±8± Choosing the Correct Glass Lamp Shade

There are many styles and sizes of glass shades, many of which are standard. It can be initially confusing trying to figure out the right size and style for your particular fixture or lamp, but here are some guidelines that will assist you in making the right choice.

First tip: Always take measurements from outside edge to outside edge as this is how glass sizes are classified.

Second tip: Remember that glass is undersize. What does this mean? If the glass is classified as a 2 1/4", or a 7", the actual measurement of the glass will be slightly less than its stated size.

The first step is to determine how your glass is held in place.

1. Does the glass sit on a table lamp or chandelier that has a round ring or tripod? You probably want a Student shade. Measure the ring, outside edge to outside edge. Standard sizes are 5", 6", 7", 8", 10", 12" and 14". There is often a place for a chimney to sit within the larger ring. Again, measure that holder, outside edge to outside edge.

2. Is the glass held in place by three screws and does it have a slightly flared neck? If so, measure the cup or holder, outside edge to outside edge.

* If the holder measures just over 2 1/4", you are looking for 2 1/4" fitter shades.

* If the holder measures just over 3 1/4" or 4", you are looking for 3 1/4" or 4" fitter shades. Both sizes come in two styles: either enclosed globes or open shades.

* Glass with 6", 8" and 10" fitters are also available in enclosed globe styles.

3. Do you have a table lamp that has a brass or glass bottom and the glass sits on a ring with no screws? You may be looking for a Gone With The Wind globe. The ring will measure just over 4" and the globe will have a straight neck that just sits on the ring. There is usually a smaller holder for a Chimney within the larger 4' ring.

4. Does your glass have a fairly flat opening with no distinct neck? Do you put it on the lamp or fixture around the light bulb socket and then screw a ring around the threaded part of the protruding socket? If so, you are looking for a Neckless shade. Most of these shades have a 1 5/8" opening.

5. Floor lamps can be very confusing. We have found the most common types to be as follows:

* If your lamp is newer, and you need a glass with a 1 5/8"-1 7/8" opening, you may need a Neckless shade. The shade is placed on the lamp around the bulb socket, and a ring generally threads around the part of the socket that protrudes.

* Shades on older floor lamps, called Torchieres, have a longish neck that measures 2 3/4" which fits around an oversize Mogul light bulb socket.

* There is also a very popular floor lamp, dating from the 1950"s, that looks like a torchiere but uses a different type of glass. If your floor lamp has a holder with screws, it will not take the older torchiere style. You need what is called an IES Diffuser glass shade. Often the IES shade supports a fabric shade. IES Diffusers come in three standard sizes: 2 1/4" fitter with a 6" top diameter, 2 1/4" fitter with an 8" top diameter, and 2 7/8" fitter with a 10" top diameter.

6. Chimneys usually sit within several prongs or inside of a round gallery. Again, measure outside edge to outside edge to determine the correct size.

7. Hurricane glass is commonly used on chandeliers and wall sconces. The holder or cup will measure about 1 3/4" outside edge to outside edge. The glass itself is called a 1 5/8" fitter, although the actual measurement is closer to 1 1/2".

Hopefully these tips will help you in determining the proper glass shade for your lamp or fixture. Good luck! Tania Maxwell
